BHG - After one year of implementation, the giant freshwater prawn farming model in Phu Linh Commune (Vi Xuyen) is gradually proving its economic efficiency, gradually helping many households increase their income and stabilise their lives.

In early 2023, Phu Linh Commune started implementing the giant freshwater prawn farming model.Initially, four households registered for participation in the project, along with two youth groups.

After a trial period, the results showed that this shrimp species adapts well to the area’s climate and soil conditions, bringing economic efficiency to farmers.

After many years of raising various types of fish but not achieving high efficiency, in April 2023, with the support of the State, Truong Thi Thuan's family in Chan 1 Village built a freshwater giant freshwater prawn farming model.

After six to seven months of farming, the family was able to harvest at a selling price of 250,000-300,000 VND per kilogram. It is estimated that one hectare can harvest 2-2.5 tonnes of giant freshwater prawn, bringing a high income to the family compared to other types of shrimp.

Realising that the giant freshwater prawn farming model has a lot of potential, Hoang Cong Thinh's family in Na Ac Village boldly tried to raise it.

With the district providing 50% of the capital, equivalent to more than 90 million VND, to buy shrimp, food, supplies, and veterinary medicine, his family converted more than 1,000m2 of rice fields into ponds for shrimp farming.

Initially, they released 30,000 giant freshwater prawns. Currently, the shrimp are growing and developing very well, and can be harvested around the beginning of October.

From the pilot model with six initial households in the villages of Chan 1 and Chan 2, by early 2024, after one year of implementation, 15 more households in other villages in the commune had registered to implement the mixed garden renovation model associated with giant freshwater prawn farming.

The success of the model not only brings a stable source of income to the people but also changes the production mindset of the people in applying scientific and technical advances to aquaculture.

Nguyen Quoc Cuong, Secretary of the Phu Linh Commune Party Committee, said: "Through reviewing model, it can be seen that the giant freshwater prawn farming model of the commune has initially been effective; people have successfully raised and sold to the market. In the coming time, to maintain and expand this model, Phu Linh Commune should continue to encourage people to take advantage of the available water surface, establish groups and teams with the same interest in shrimp farming, ensure the supply of input seeds, animal feed and find stable output, thereby gradually creating a brand for giant freshwater prawn products of Phu Linh Commune."
