Online English teaching and learning, a good model needs to be replicated

BHG - Implementing the new general education programme, from the 2022 - 2023 school year, high school students are required to learn English from the 3rd grade. In convenient places, teaching English to students from the 1st grade is encouraged. During the 2022-2023 school year, Ha Giang Province lacked 2,947 teachers and staff, including 269 English teachers, while in the 2023 - 2024 school year, there was a lack of 3,714 teachers and staff, including 385 English teachers. There are districts like Meo Vac where the entire district has only one primary school English teacher.

To overcome the shortage of teachers, especially English teachers, Ha Giang Province has coordinated with the Department of Education and Training of Lam Dong Province, to create conditions and support a team of English teachers for primary schools in the province in the form of organising free online teaching via the Internet.

Thus, the Lam Dong Department of Education and Training has paid attention, created conditions, and proactively connected according to the proposal of the Ha Giang Department of Education and Training, to deploy and support the source of teachers with virtual English classes for the above schools in Meo Vac and Bac Me districts, with a spirit of enthusiasm and responsibility.

During the online English teaching period from October 2023 until the end of the 2023 - 2024 school year, 2 - 3 shifts/week/class volunteer to participate in online teaching through virtual classrooms for nine schools, with more than 1,100 elementary students from two districts of Bac Me and Meo Vac.

Through evaluation at the end of the school year, regarding the quality of English subjects in the first semester of the 2023 - 2024 school year, the supported schools were ranked well and completed at 92.5%; unfinished reached 7.5%. The initial results of this coordinated online teaching programme showed that teachers in Lam Dong Province have not been afraid of difficulties, diligently researched lessons, and designed online lessons suitable for students, regional characteristics and qualifications of students in Ha Giang Province.
