BHG - Ha Giang City serves as the economic, political, cultural, and social hub of the province, playing a crucial role in comprehensive development and regional connectivity. In recent years, the city has made significant progress in urban planning, infrastructure investment, and improving residents’ quality of life, aiming to become a class-II urban area by 2030.

Ha Giang City consists of eight administrative units, including communes and wards, with 101 villages and residential areas. The city’s general urban planning up to 2035, approved by the Prime Minister, covers an area of 179.262 km2.

The city has been focusing resources and directing comprehensive planning efforts, completing nine subdivision planning projects and implementing various urban technical infrastructure projects such as roads, squares, parks, museums, cultural and sports complexes, urban zones, and commercial townhouses. Several landmark projects have transformed the city’s landscape, including upgrading March 26 Square, renovating Green Park, constructing a water-raising dam for scenic enhancement, and developing a dual-lane city entrance road. Currently, Ha Giang City has met 51 out of 63 criteria for class-II urban status and is working toward completing the remaining criteria.

On January 7, 2025, the Provincial People’s Committee issued Decision No. 33, approving Ha Giang City’s urban development programme through 2035. The programme aims to develop the city into a commercial, tourism, and service centre of the province, serving as a key linkage point between the Thanh Thuy International Border Gate Economic Zone, the Dong Van Karst Plateau Global Geopark, and other regions. The development strategy integrates economic and social growth with national defence and security while preserving and promoting the city’s cultural identity. Investments focus on establishing modern, synchronised, and sustainable infrastructure.

The city is currently mobilising human resources, restructuring its economy, and promoting trade, services, and tourism in connection with traditional cultural values. Additionally, it is investing in social infrastructure, expanding urban spaces, developing public welfare projects, and enhancing high-quality commodity agriculture. Efforts are also being made to increase budget revenues from land use, develop the real estate market, and improve education, healthcare, and social welfare, all while ensuring security and defence.

With well-planned strategies, synchronised investments, and the joint efforts of the government and residents, Ha Giang City is making steady progress toward achieving class-II urban status between 2026 and 2030. It is poised to become a standout urban centre in the northern mountainous region, paving the way for modern development across the province.
